Caitlin Heffernan approaches nature as a network rather than a distant view. Roots, rivers, geological forces and atmospheric movement enter paintings in which human memory and imagination are entangled with the more-than-human world.

Her process is intuitive and materially responsive. Oil, acrylic, charcoal, pigment and elements such as sand create surfaces that hold physical as well as visual traces of place. Forms emerge, dissolve and reconnect, moving the viewer between recognition and uncertainty rather than resolving into a single explanation.

Science, mythology and environmental philosophy sit alongside one another in her research. Fungal communication, rhizomes and biological systems become starting points for an imaginative language. Ecological knowledge is made sensorial, while ambiguity preserves the work’s emotional and symbolic range.

Environmental awareness shapes Heffernan’s subject matter and studio thinking. Biodiversity, ecological networks and humanity’s place within living systems are explored through images that make interdependence felt rather than delivering a didactic message.

Her material practice includes natural elements and environmentally considered choices where they serve the work, but it also uses conventional media including acrylic. That complexity should remain visible. The sustainability of the practice lies in continued material scrutiny and a philosophy of connection, not in treating any single ingredient as proof of an entirely sustainable artwork.
